Women have thrived in Leadership roles through the ages, History has borne proof of the same. Even so, their leadership qualities, decision-making abilities and knowledge have been questioned time and again.  Being a woman in a leadership role comes with unique challenges and opportunities. Women in leadership often have to navigate a combination of societal expectations, gender biases, and the need to prove their competence in environments traditionally dominated by men. Despite such adverse societal prejudices women have proved their mettle in diverse conditions.

However, being a Woman in a Leadership Role, in a male-dominated society also means that your success is celebrated twice as much or breaking the barriers to form powerful role models who leave lasting impressions.

Challenges :

This is a role meant for challenges.  No-one, absolutely no-one will make it bearable let alone make it easy for you. Let us understand a few of the most common challenges a woman might face.

 1. Stereotypes and gender bias:  Women have to face double standards of judgement where a figure of authority is concerned.  She is first and foremost judged on the basis of her gender for acheiving the post rather than her qualification experience. After that, she is considered ‘bossy’ when being firm instead of being considered authoritative or competitive as a man might be considered.

2.Work-Life Balance: Women often struggle to balance work and life.  It is applicable to both married and unmarried women although the contexts can be vastly different.

3.Lack of Mentorship: History has been proof that in a male dominated upper society, women have ben expected to take a back foot and remain at home rather than find a career.  In such a situation lack of mentorship has hindered the thought processes and the necessary guidance for such roles.

4.Sexual Harassment and Discrimination: Women in leadership roles are more likely to experience inappropriate behavior or discrimination. Men can behave extremely inappropriately or lash out when they feel challenged or wronged even if the Woman in question is deserving.

5.Limited Access to Power Networks: “Meetings are held in Board Rooms, but deals are made on the Golf Course”.  Women are often at a disadvantage where these out-of-office Relationship Building Opportunities are concerned. ‘Favors’ are meted out and ‘Connections’ turn up when the ‘Boys’ hang out.

6.Underrepresentation: Gender biasness plays a huge role in situations where are woman has to presented or she is representing something. Often Gender Equality or other such agendas find priority on demand rather than let the Person’s choice or leadership style flourish.

7.Cultural Expectations: In many situations women are criticised for being aggressive or forward-thinking or competitive in nature even when these same qualities would be appreciated and applauded in men.

Leadership is about influence, vision, and the ability to inspire others.  Being a woman there will be certain expectations.  The key to holding your on while being a true leader to people can become a bit easier with these next steps.
